$10m renewal program for estate revealed

19 Sep 2018 Benalla Ensign, Benalla VIC (General News) Benalla West Housing Estate is set to benefit from a $10 million upgrade as part of a boost to regional public housing by the Andrews Labour Government. State Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes announced the upgrade, which will focus on upgrading housing stock, better public spaces and connection to surrounding neighbourhoods. Rural City of Benalla is working with the Labour Government, community and residents to help inform, prepare and deliver the improvements. The first phase of the program is to seek feedback from the community about what they would like to see improved, before determining what happens in the estate, which may include improvements to housing, streets, public spaces and landscaping. By undertaking a major renewal project in this neighbourhood it will build pride within the community, Ms Symes said. The renewal program will be completed in phases to ensure successful planning within the community is at the forefront of the project. A Community Consultation Committee will be established with local community leaders, residents and council to inform the planning of the project during the next 12 to 18 months, to ensure local residents are given a say in the planned upgrade. Modern public housing must provide residents with safe, appropriate homes and community infrastructure, Ms Symes said. This project is about ensuring appropriate housing is available to people who live in Benalla, The Department of Health and Human Services will provide support and assistance for tenants to participate in this process. The estate upgrade is also a part of the broader $30 million public housing boost for regional Victoria.
