Chemical tests grow, Herald Sun, Melbourne
THE Country Fire Authoritys chemical contamination scandal has widened, with six more sites statewide to be tested for a cancer-causing chemical. The Environment Protection Authority has ordered tests for PFOS at sites in Penshurst, Wangaratta, Horsham, Bendigo, Sale and Bangholme. Its regional services director Damian Wells said water was safe to drink in those areas. However, EPA will ensure a comprehensive testing program in order to clarify the nature and extent of potential contamination that may have gone beyond the boundary of the training centres, he said. If contamination is detected around training facilities, landholders who may be affected will be contacted directly. PFOS, an ingredient in a banned firefighting foam, was behind the closure of the Fiskville training college in March.
