Indigo schools share funding, Ovens and Murray Advertiser, Wangaratta VIC

INDIGO schools are to share in Victorian education grants of more than $10 million designed to improve childrens learning opportunities. Jaclyn Symes (MLC, Northern Victoria) said on Monday that the investment meant every child is given the best chance in life. The funding is targeted at breaking what the government sees as a clear link between a students social and economic background and how well they do at school. The State Government says it wants more students to reach the highest levels of reading, mathematics and science and to improve confidence, resilience and critical and creative thinking. Its aim is to reduce the number of children who drop out of school and training every year. Rutherglen High School has secured $97,069 as part of the state investment. Beechworth Secondary College is to be given almost $34,600. Primary schools to receive funding include Chiltern $42,695, Rutherglen $39,724, Wahgunyah $32,287, Beechworth $16,477, Kiewa Valley $9539, Yackandandah $7227 and Barnawartha $5000. Everton, Osbornes Flat, Upper Sandy Creek and Wooragee primary schools will also receive grants of $5000 each. Education Minister James Merlino said that many Victorians believed that state schools were good. They arent broken, but we can absolutely make them better, he said. The government said the grants were tied to a new emphasis on collaboration and accountability.
