10 May 2018 Ovens and Murray Advertiser, Wangaratta VIC (General News) THE STATE Government has pledged $161,500 to improve pedestrian safety across Indigo Shire. Jaclyn Symes (MLA, Northern Victoria) announced the funding on Monday, with three key projects to be completed in coming months A new sealed footpath will be constructed on the Murray Valley Highway between Hopetoun Road and Hunter Street a key missing link for the local footpath network connecting the CBD with the local primary school, parklands and Rutherglens famous wine bottle. Indigo Shire Council is contributing $13,200 to this project. A shared path is also being constructed on Myrtleford-Yackandandah Road in Yackandandah so pedestrians and cyclists no longer need to negotiate busy roadsides to travel from Back Creek Road to the town. New electronic 40km/h signs will also be installed in the Kiewa Valley Primary School speed zone on Kiewa East Road, Tangambalanga, to replace the existing static speed signs. There has been strong support from the local community and police for electronic signage to increase awareness of the school zone on this busy freight route. Labor is investing in these vital safety improvements to create a safer environment for pedestrians and cyclists our most vulnerable road users, Ms Symes said. Im particularly pleased that new electronic signage in the school speed zone will also be installed, improving safety for students. The projects are to be funded as part of the State Governments Building Our Regions fund, which supports VicRoads to work with community and local councils to deliver projects at a low cost with greater value. All of the works are due to be completed mid-year.
