THE Andrews Labor Government has boosted safety for drivers working and living in the farming communities of Monea and Longwood by making vital upgrades to local level crossings. Jaclyn Symes (MLC Northern Victoria) said works have been completed installing new boom gates and lights at the level crossings on Williams Road in Monea and Oxenburys Road in Longwood. The $50 million program is upgrading 52 high-risk road crossings and 25 dangerous pedestrian crossings across the state. Were upgrading dangerous and high-risk level crossings along the North East line, because we want to make near misses and collisions with trains a thing of the past, Ms Symes said. New boom-gates and lights will make it easier for drivers to see oncoming trains, while also keeping V/Line passengers and staff safe. So far 25 road crossings and seven pedestrian crossings have been upgraded under the program, with more than half of these crossings on the North East line. Works at both crossings were carried out between August and September, with the Labor Government fast-tracking all country crossing upgrades to be completed by late 2018.
