By Ian Blyth THE Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Luke Donnellan, has been told to get on with the job and release the Kilmore Wallan bypass environmental impact statement and to make an announcement on the future of the project. And the call to action comes from one of his own party. Labor MLC for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes raised the issue in Parliament last Thursday, referring to the bypass issue as an ongoing saga. Ms Symes said that she has previously met with concerned residents and local government officials and says that she understands the frustration and anger with this mismanagement and lack of decision that she attributes to the former coalition government. In addition to giving Mr Donnellan the hurry on, Ms Symes has also criticised the former government for failing to deliver the project. The Liberal-Nationals government managed to sign contracts for a big expensive road in inner Melbourne that it had not promised and that Victorians did not want, whilst utterly failing to deliver a road it did promise, Ms Symes said It is a road that the people of Kilmore and Wallan, as well as truck drivers and freight companies, actually want and need, she added. Ms Symes also raised the issue of health problems developed by residents in the path of the three bypass options. Saying that these were from the stress of not knowing if their house will have to be acquired or if their house will have a view of a road. I ask that the Minister for Roads and Road Safety work with the Minister for Planning and release the Kilmore-Wallan bypass environment effects statement and advisory committee report, meet with the community and announce a decision on a route so that this community can move forward with certainty, Ms Symes added. Coincidentally, the need for a bypass was demonstrated on the same day last week when an accident saw the closure of the Hume Freeway south bound lanes and the main streets of Kilmore and Wallan struggled to cope with the increased traffic load. 03 Mar 2015 North Central Review (Kilmore), Melbourne
