THE Euroa-Mansfield Road is now a safer place to drive after almost $3 million in works was officially completed last week.
The upgrade included realigning one curve to improve sight distance for drivers, creating wider road shoulders to reduce dangerous bends, lowering the crest at the Penny Lane and Ridge Road intersections and installing flexible safety barriers.
The section of road upgrading, which include over 700 metres, has seen nine lane departure crashes in the last five years, resulting in the tragic loss of two lives and five serious injuries.
Upper House member Jaclyn Symes (MLC, Northern Victoria) said the works were part of the State Governments $1.1 billion Towards Zero Action Plan.
Weve made this dangerous section of Euroa-Mansfield Road much safer and helped to reduce the risk of accidents, Ms Symes said. Not only has this upgrade made this road more reliable for those who use it every day, its also delivered a boost to local jobs and business.
The Towards Zero Action Plan aims to reduce the number of lives lost to 200 or fewer and to reduce serious injuries by 15 per cent by 2020.
The speed limit on the Euroa-Mansfield Road has returned to 60kmh now that the upgrade is complete.
The works were undertaken by Victorian company Wright Earthmoving supporting local jobs and business.
