BETTER COMMUNITY CONNECTION FOR SAFER SCHOOLS

21 March 2026

The Allan Labor Government is making sure Victorian kids feel safer and more connected at school – no matter their background, culture or beliefs.

Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes announced a $118,000 investment in Shepparton District Ethnic Council to continue the vital work they do in Shepparton into 2026 – working to stop violence, aggression and anti-social behaviour in Victorian schools.

The Social Cohesion Through Education (SCTE) program creates real connections between young people through sport, mentoring, leadership programs and cultural activities.

The program funds six community organisations to work with over 11,000 students, 2,500 parents and 600 school staff each year, thanks to a $708,000 investment from the Labor Government.

Research shows that when schools actively promote inclusiveness and belonging, students develop stronger resilience against violence, aggression and anti-social behaviour.

The program’s success stems from the community input and the people who know their schools best.

Each activity – whether it's peer support groups, resilience workshops, youth networking events or parental engagement sessions – is co-created with participating schools to meet their specific needs.

This program is just one of many social cohesion initiatives the Labor Government is running to create a safer and more inclusive Victoria for everyone.
