Glenrowan locals and visitors will be taken back to the last stand of the Kelly Gang as modern technology brings one of Australia’s most recognised historical stories to life, thanks to the Andrews Labor Government.
Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes today represented Minister for Regional Development Harriet Shing to officially tour the newly completed Ned Kelly Discovery Hub, set to open next month. The project was backed with $3.5 million from the Building Works package.
The hub, located at Lions Park in the heart of the Glenrowan Heritage Precinct, enables visitors to be immersed in the retelling of Ned Kelly’s siege and capture in 1880 through interactive visual and audio storytelling.
Visitors can make their way up to an accessible and architecturally-designed viewing platform containing an impressive 20-metre, nine-tonne structural steel roof, while taking in panoramic views of key locations in Glenrowan connected to the Kelly story.
Interactive storytelling shares the experiences of the hostages, police and Indigenous trackers involved in the siege events. A new visitor information centre within the hub will provide a gateway to Glenrowan and Wangaratta with information on the region’s attractions.
The Discovery Hub will feature the key sites of the final Kelly conflict including the original Glenrowan Railway Station, the site of Anne Jones’ Inn and the location of Ned Kelly's fall and capture – the ‘Kelly Log’.
The hub’s location allows visitors access to the area where the siege events unfolded and provides an insight into the historic events that occurred in Glenrowan, the place most identifiable with the Ned Kelly story.
The viewing platform and visitor information centre will open to the public on Saturday 16 September.
The Ned Kelly Discovery Hub is part of the Labor Government’s record investment of more than $41 billion across rural and regional Victoria since 2015.
