Labor is making Wodonga's Gateway Island precinct an even more attractive destination for visitors and locals.
Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes celebrated the completion of the Gateway Island Trail Activation Project during NAIDOC Week 2026, backed by $98,000 through the Government’s Council Support Package.
The 4.3-kilometre trail travels along the river, looping in Wodonga Creek, and joining existing trails.
It celebrates Wodonga’s First Peoples through culturally significant artworks designed by local First Peoples artists.
Set among the sweeping bends and shaded riverbanks with their towering river red gums, the trail features interpretative signage, new seating and improved accessibility.
The trail also celebrates and connects with the widely recognised Eddie Kneebone Walking trail and the Burraja Cultural Centre at Gateway Village.
It offers a rich experience of First Peoples cultural art, while strengthening the region’s visitor experience.
First Peoples artists played a central role in guiding the project, which was delivered by Wodonga Council with support from the Wodonga Men’s Shed.
In the first quarter of 2026, visitors to the Hume region spent more than $1.6 billion locally, with almost 2 million domestic trips bringing more than 2.5 million overnight stays to the region.
Only Labor is investing in regional Victoria, with more than $50 billion delivered over the past decade to make our regional cities and towns better places to live, work, and study.
